Oodi koiralle

Koira kysyy minulta
enkä minä vastaa.
Se hypähtää, juoksee pitkin piennarta ja kysyy
sanattomasti
ja sen silmät
ovat kaksi kosteaa kysymystä, kaksi märkää
liekkiä jotka pyystävät vastausta
enkä minä vastaa,
en vastaa koska
en tiedä, en mahda mitään.

Avarilla vainiomailla  me kuljemme,
mies ja koira.

Lehdet hehkuvat,
kuin joku
olisi suudellut niitä,
jokaista erikseen,
maasta kohoavat
kaikki ilmoille
pienet planetaarionsa,
lehvistöjen yötaivaat,
ymmyrkäiset ja vihreät,
ja me kuljemme, mies ja koira,
nuuhkien maailmaa, apilaa kahistellen
Chilen vainioilla,
syyskuun kirkkaiden sormien lomissa.

Koira pysähtelee,
ajelee mehiläisiä,
hypähtää läikähtävään lätäkköön,
kuuntelee kaukaista kaukaisempia
koiranhaukkuja,
lirauttaa kiven juureen
ja tuo minulle kuononpäänsä,
tuo sen minulle kuin lahjan.
Siinä piilee sen hellä raikkaus,
sen kautta sen hellyys puhuu,
ja noin se kysyy
kahdella silmällään
miksi on päivä, miksi tulee yö,
miksei kevät
tuonut korissaan
mitään
harhaileville koirille
paitsi hyödyttömiä kukkia,
kukkia, kukkia ja kukkia.
Niin kyselee
koira
enkä minä vastaa.

Vaellamme,
mies ja koira joita yhdistää
vihreä aamu
ja mieltä kiihdyttävä tyhjä yksinäisyys
jossa vain me
olemme olemassa,
tämä kasteisen koiran
ja metsärunoilijan ykseys,
sillä lymyileviä lintuja
ja salaisia kukkia ei ole olemassa

kahdelle kaverukselle,
kahdelle metsästyskumppanille:
on vain viserrystrillejä ja tuoksua,
maailma joka yö
on tislaillut kosteaksi,
vihreä tunneli ja sen päässä
niitty,
appelsiinintuoksuisen ilman humaus,
juuristojen supina,
elämä joka kulkee jalan,
hengittää, kasvaa,
ja yliaikainen ystävyys,
onni
olla koira ja olla ihminen
yhtyneenä
yhdeksi eläimeksi
joka kulkee liikutellen
kuutta jalkaa
ja yhtä kasteenkosteaa
häntää.

 Oodi kiitokselle

Kiitos sanalle
joka osoittaa kiitollisuutta.
Kiitos kiitokselle
siitä
miten paljon se sana
sulattaa lunta tai rautaa.

Maailma näytti uhkaavalta
kunnes pehmeänä
kuin heleä
höyhen
tai makeana kuin sokerin terälehti,
huulten välitse
kulkee
kiitos,
suurena suun täydeltä
tai kuiskattuna,
tuskin mumistuna,
ja olento oli taas ihminen
eikä ikkuna,
jotain kirkasta
levisi metsään:
oli mahdollista laulaa lehvistön alla.

Kiitos, olet pilleri
ylenkatseen
purevia happoja vastaan,
olet valo joka kaataa kovuuden alttarin.
Kenties
olet ollut
myös kukkaköynnös
kaikkein kaukaisimpien ihmisten välillä.
Matkalaiset
kulkivat hajallaan
luonnon keskellä
ja sitten tuntemattomien ihmisten
aarniometsässä:
merci,
kun juna rynnistää,
vaihtaa isänmaata,
pyyhkii pois rajat,
spasibo,
liki terävähuippuisia
tulivuoria, pakkasta ja tulta,
thanks, niin, kiitos, ja sitten
muuttuu maailma taas pöydäksi:
yksi sana sen puhdisti,
lautaset ja lasit kimaltavat,
haarukat kilahtelevat
ja tasangot ovat liinoja.

Kiitos, kiitos,
tee matkaa ja tule takaisin,
nouse,
ja laskeudu.
Tiedetään kyllä, et sinä
kaikkea voi täyttää,
sana kiitos,
mutta
missä häivähtää
sinun pieni terälehtesi,
siellä piiloutuvat ylpeyden tikarit,
ja ilmaantuu hymyn pilkahdus.

Ode to Enchanted Light

Under the trees light
has dropped from the top of the sky,
light
like a green
latticework of branches,
shining
on every leaf,
drifting down like clean
white sand.

A cicada sends
its sawing song
high into the empty air.

The world is
a glass overflowing
with water.

XVII.

Have you noticed that autumn
is like a yellow cow?

And how later the autumnal beast
is a dark skeleton?

And how winter collects
so many layers of blue?

And who asked springtime
for its kingdom of clear air?

LXXII.

If all rivers are sweet
where does the sea get its salt?

How do the seasons know
they must change their shirt?

Why so slowly in winter
and later with such a rapid shudder?

LXIX.

With which stars do they go on speaking,
the rivers that never reach the sea?

And how do the roots know
they must climb toward the light?

And then greet the air
with so many flowers and colors?

Is it always the same spring
who revives her role?

LXXIV.

Why does it linger in the branches
until the leaves fall?

And where are its yellow trousers
left hanging?

Is it true that autumn seems to wait
for something to happen?

Perhaps the trembling of a leaf
or the movement of the universe?

Is there a magnet under the earth,
brother magnet of autumn?

When is the appointment of the rose
decreed under the earth?

Ode to a Chestnut on the Ground

From bristly foliage
you fell
complete, polished wood, gleaming mahogany,
as perfect
as a violin newly
born of the treetops,
that falling
offers its sealed-in gifts,
the hidden sweetness
that grew in secret
amid birds and leaves,
a model of form,
kin to wood and flour,
an oval instrument
that holds within it
intact delight, an edible rose.

In the heights you abandoned
the sea-urchin burr
that parted its spines
in the light of the chestnut tree;
through that slit
you glimpsed the world,
birds
bursting with syllables,
starry
dew
below,
the heads of boys
and girls,
grasses stirring restlessly,
smoke rising, rising.

You made your decision,
chestnut, and leaped to earth,
burnished and ready,
firm and smooth
as the small breasts
of the islands of America.

You fell,
you struck
the ground,
but
nothing happened,
the grass
still stirred, the old
chestnut sighed with the mouths
of a forest of trees,
a red leaf of autumn fell,
resolutely, the hours marched on
across the earth.

Because you are
only
a seed,
chestnut tree, autumn, earth,
water, heights, silence
prepared the germ,
the floury density,
the maternal eyelids
that buried will again
open toward the heights
the simple majesty of foliage,
the dark damp plan
of new roots,
the ancient but new dimensions
of another chestnut tree in the earth.

Lost in the Forest

Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig
and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips:
maybe it was the voice of the rain crying,
a cracked bell, or a torn heart.

Something from far off it seemed
deep and secret to me, hidden by the earth,
a shout muffled by huge autumns,
by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves.

Wakening from the dreaming forest there, the hazel-sprig
sang under my tongue, its drifting fragrance
climbed up through my conscious mind

as if suddenly the roots I had left behind
cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood -
and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.
